How the Ritchie’s spent their Saturday…

Our day began with sleeping in past our normal wake up time, which is always a wonderful way to start the day.  The morning was very low-key with some Mario Kart, pasta salad preparation, gift wrapping and relaxing.  Here is Veda and the pets to illustrate that…

And Napoleon has deemed our bathroom sink (which just barely holds all of him) as his new bed. So this is often where we find him, this morning was no exception.

This afternoon we all went over to Mark’s Aunt Judy’s house for a Ritchie family gathering.  Every year for the last 45 years Judy has hosted this get together, but this year will be her last.  She is handing over the reins to the next generation.  I wish our house was bigger, because we would be honored to take on the hosting responsibilities.  We shall see who decides to take this on (we nominate Molly and Joel!).

Here is the evening in pictures…. what? Did you actually have any doubts that’s how the story would be told?

And the award goes to…

Claire! On Wednesday at school, they had an assembly to give out some awards for the first trimester that ended last week.  Claire was telling me the story, that she had just taken out her ponytail and her hair was all whonky in the back (ladies, you know what she’s referring to).. and she said “I hope they don’t call my name” and then … they called her name!  Because she made the HONOR ROLL (I can’t wait to get my bumper sticker!) with a 3.8 GPA for the trimester.  So proud!!  I’M SO PROUD!  And, if that’s not enough, she was also recognized for having PERFECT ATTENDANCE. Awesome job!  I know I say it alot, but she’s growing up so fast!

Have a holly jolly…

Christmas!  Yes, that time of year has swooped down upon us and it’s super cold outside!  I mean, really really cold!  When I drove by the reader board a few blocks from work this morning, it read 10 degrees!  I literally did a double take, it just seems so crazy.  Our poor house is struggling to warm the family that inhabits it.  Tonight as we put the girls to bed, and turned on the small space heaters in their rooms (since we don’t have heater vents in the upstairs, don’t worry it’s on the to-do list), a breaker blew and Claire’s heater turned off, including a couple lights downstairs.  After a little retrace of steps, I realized that normally her heater gets plugged into the other outlet on the far wall, not the one that also electrifies her lamp.  So far, so good.  Aw, winter…I’m not a huge fan of you, but you already know this.  I am much more of a hot weather girl, who seems to have found herself loving a not-so-hot place to live.  Ah well, what are you gonna do?

On to the events of the evening!  We decorated our beautiful tree!  We ordered a tree from the Boy Scouts through a co-worker of mine this year.  Not only did they deliver the tree, but they will also come back and pick it up for recycle after the new year.  How cool is that?  Not to mention that part of their proceeds go to feeding homeless families a holiday meal.  Bonus!  It’s a Noble Fir and it’s the biggest Christmas tree I’ve ever spent time with, let me tell you.  Here are some pictures, taken by myself, Claire and Mark so that no detail was missed…

Weekend update…

We had yet another busy weekend!  But I guess that’s what they are for, to fit in all those things you can’t do during the week because you are at work and the kids are in school.  We went east to Arlington, where I grew up (Population: 524) to visit with my Dad and also stop in to see my Grandma.

Question:  How many cattle guards are there between our house and Papa Ron’s?  Answer:  6

It was beautiful weather and the girls got up bright and early on Saturday morning to help Papa feed the horses.

Papa and the girls, wearing the brightest colors ever.. They went to get "dressed" and apparently all that meant was layering a bunch of warm clothing over the top of their jammies. Hence, Veda in her nightgown. Goofballs!

Then we went back inside to warm up and the dogs were loving the hot fire in the woodstove.  Papa fell in love with little Rudy the moment he streaked by his feet when we arrived Friday evening.  It was pretty cute to see them snuggling in the chair.  Rudy is a great lap dog, and he’s so darn cute it’s hard to not get attached.  I was afraid we were going to have to pry them apart when we left!

We played a new game I picked up while shopping on Black Friday, it's called "Mad Gab". I highly recommend listening to the suggested playing rules, and pick one person to read loud while the others listen. It's a lot harder than it looks!

In the afternoon we made the drive along the creek (currently dry as a bone) over to my Grandma Brooks’ ranch.

Question:  How many cattle guards are between Papa’s house and Grandma’s?   Answer:  8

I love this ranch for so many reasons, but mainly because it’s been my Grandparent’s ranch since before I was born, so all of my memories of my Grandpa (who passed away in March of ’99) are at this house.  Every time I visit I am filled with the most wonderful warmth and happiness.  It’s a piece of heaven in my opinion, see for yourself…

This is the garden and the greenhouse, you should see all the beautiful colors in the Spring and Summer, I will definitely have to post again then.

Here is the gazebo where I have the most wonderful memories of my Grandpa holding tiny Claire, just weeks old. My Mom and my sister were home from Las Vegas and the weather was gorgeous. We were all mesmerized by the sweetness of this little girl. I really wish she could remember this too, but that would be a miracle of science.

The barn, where we used to play as kids. There was a loft up top (it has since aged and become not safe to climb up to) that we used to play in for hours on end, and the tack room where I used to picture my Mom as 1967 Rodeo Queen, getting her horse ready for a parade.

My Grandma now lives there alone, but my cousin and his family live just a mile up the road and help her take care of the ranch.  We were fortunate enough to see them also that day, and my Mom came out and brought my nephews (my brother and his wife were at a Larry the Cable Guy show that evening, yeah buddy).  So Grandma Brooks had a house full of great grandchildren and it was a lot of fun!

It took awhile for Hunter to warm up to all the chaos, but as soon as you put the camera on him, he knows how to turn on the cuteness!

When it came time to try and get them all wrangled in for a group photo with Great Grandma, Hunter wasn't really in the mood anymore. But he did stay there long enough to capture this, which he will be teased about the rest of his life I'm sure. I know this because as I was taking pictures, my Mom recounted a story about how I was always the one crying in the group shots when we were little. Thanks Mom!

It was another fantastic weekend and it was great to see everyone.  Thanks to Dad and Marta for opening up their home to us, they always make us feel like we have lived there all along.  See you again soon!

A picture’s worth a thousand words….

… so I will try and let them do all the talking… a few weeks ago I showed the girls this program that my friend Elena introduced me to on my laptop.

it’s called Photo Booth, which basically takes your picture and then skews it in various forms of hilarity… it’s hours of fun, especially if left in the hands of one 8 year old, and one 11 year old… here’s proof:
