Family Vacation 2010: Orcas Island, Day One

Today started with my alarm not going off, not waking us up at 4am, the time we needed to get up in order to get the car packed and loaded and hit the road, in order to catch the 12:30pm ferry in Anacortes to Orcas Island.  But not to worry.  I snapped awake at 4:35am, swore at my sleeping husband (who I immediately thought had somehow turned off the alarm instead of hitting snooze) and rushed to the shower.  Where I promptly realized that the alarm just never went off, and apologized to my now awake and irritated husband.  We rushed and made quick order of the packing process.  The girls had been up since 4am, you know, doing yoga and preparing for the long drive (seriously? yes, I’m serious).  We were on the road by 5:30am and happy as clams.  We made great time and were able to actually catch the earlier ferry to Orcas Island, which left the dock at 10:15am.

Did I mention that we invited our parents along on our vacation this year?  Well, we did.  And they gladly accepted!

We couldn’t check into our house until 4pm so we had several hours to kill when we arrived on the island.  We had a picnic lunch at Moran State Park.  And then we went into the town of Eastsound and walked through some of their fun little retail shops.  It was a little on the chilly side and the wind was blowing.  The weather promises to improve as the week goes on, but we haven’t let the cold dampen our spirits!

We are on VACATION, after all.

Our rental house is amazing.  It has so much room and a beautiful view of the ocean.  The hot tub needs to warm up a lot more, but the girls can wait until tomorrow to enjoy that.  We played a fun game of bean bag toss in the front yard and now we’re sitting down to some BBQ burgers for dinner.  Which means, I need to fix my plate!  Until tomorrow, xoxo!
